NetApp = UNIFIED STORAGE (since 2002)
Cell phones and photocopiers - The most iconic devices regularly used by flamboyant Heroes of Hollywood. Imagine James Bond using these devices few decades ago. People really thought either "wow" or crazy nuts! These devices deserves a a mention on historical perspective for changing the world.
Mobile Phones
Father of Cellular Phone - Martin Cooper
The first mobile phone was invented in 1973 at Motorola by Martin. He walked into the streets on New York with a 2Kg mobile device and the people in the streets were gaped at the sight of somebody walking and taking on a phone. His vision was for personal wireless communications. "People want to talk to other people - not a house, or an office, or a car. Given a choice, people will demand the freedom to communicate wherever they are, unfettered by the infamous copper wire. It is that freedom we sought to vividly demonstrate in 1973," he said. Today there are more mobile phone lines than the fixed lines.
Photo copiers
Art of Photocopying - Xerox
Photocopiers are 50 years old and it is taken for granted that any modern office will have one of them. It plays a significant roles in every office and home. Think about your degree certificates copies, Your copy of driving licenses or even bank receipts. Copiers are also taken for granted because it has been very successful. It took Carlson and Haloid many many years to develop a prototype for $2000 to manufacture in 1960's. For many including me, photocopying is known as Xerox.
Mobile phones and Photocopiers are in a different avatar today. They are a part of Unified revolution. Mobile phones are getting more and more Unified. IPhones and Google phones have made Unified communications a reality supporting phone, Email and other applications. Similarly All-in-one printers are very common today supporting Photocopying, Fax, Phone and Printers.
Drawing a similarity, NetApp invented the first Unified storage in 2002 and has been very successful in powering up many enterprise datacenters. NetApp Unified Storage supports SAN and NAS on the same array. NetApp innovation has always been focused to provide benefit for enterprise customers rather than just speeds and feeds. NetApp Unified storage significantly reduces cost and complexity, Storage efficiency features like deduplication and Thin provisioning reduces the storage capacity.
Historically Unified innovations have been very successful. Be it Iphones, All-in-one-printers and Swiss Knife. NetApp Unified storage is no different. After a decade since NetApp Unified innovation, many storage vendors are realizing the fact the Unified storage really makes sense in the enterprise datacenters.
You will hear a lot and lot of "I am unified" arrays in the future.
But Aptly NetApp = UNIFIED STORAGE since 2002
