Hi All,
This is neto from Brazil
How are you?
I have been reading and studying some literature about Oracle and I found and interesting document at Oracle Storage Guy's blog about EMC Midsize Solutions for Oracle.
The document EMC Celerra NS Series Multi-Protocol Storage System is an up-to-date document: September, 2008 and I have found some interesting points:
The purpose of the EMC Midsize Solutions for Oracle is described on the website as:
"EMC Midsize Solutions for Oracle give you validated solutions for physical and virtualized Oracle environments. With Midsize Solutions for Oracle, you can meet your service-level requirements for Oracle 10g or Oracle 11g in Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) and single-instance environments.
Benefit from powerful, high-availability IP storage in your Oracle environments with EMC solutions that deliver convenient, integrated models and flexible gateway configurations. You'll streamline and simplify management of your production environments as well as tier-two environments such as test and development."
The "simple" solution (Pure NFS)
Another "simple" solution (NFS and FCP - aka Multiprotocol - Are you sure?)
Interesting points of simplicity... Are you sure?
1) Deduplication - a new device !!!
2) Celerra Snap"Are you"Sure for EMC backups. How about performance?
3) Replication - Another ... new device !!!
4) Celerra NS Series is connected on FC switches? hey, where is the CLARiiON ? (Not a native and true Multiprotocol)
5) ASM Clones. How to "restamp" an ASM disk group name to be used on the same host or in a different host? (without requiring additional storage space) and of course supported by Oracle.

Points of simplicity
1) NetApp Architecture - True and Native Multiprotocol, RAID DP native and no performance issues as typical RAID 6 implementations and FlexVol - native Thin Provisioning.
2) NetApp Snapshots™. Perform instant backups with no performance hit, while applications are running. No performance impact as Snap"Are You"Sure
3) Reducing the mean time to recovery (MTTR) of Oracle Databases (NetApp SnapRestore®). In seconds, SnapRestore software can recover anything from an individual file, individual LUN to a multiterabyte volume so that operations can resume quickly (seconds).
4) Saving space with clones of Oracle databases (NetApp FlexClone®). In seconds, NetApp FlexClone technology creates true clones, instantly replicated data volumes and data sets without requiring additional storage space when compared with Big Cost Volumes technologies (aka BCV).
5) Replication - NetApp SnapMirror® is one of the key foundation solutions to protect your business-critical data running on NetApp storage. Replicate data across your global network at high speeds in a simple, reliable, and cost-effective manner with SnapMirror.
6) NetApp Deduplication - NetApp deduplication is a fundamental component of our core operating architecture - Data ONTAP®. NetApp deduplication is the first that can be used broadly across many applications, including primary data, backup data, and archival data.
7) SnapManager for Oracle - SnapManager for Oracle (SMO) is a fantastic tool that can help corporation to create consistent snapshots (instantaneous backups), restores and clone with all NetApp flexibility. In partnership with Oracle®, NetApp is the only vendor to integrate with ASM at a level which allows ASM disks cloning, backup of ASM disk groups that span more than one storage volume, block-level restore of ASM backups using Partial File SnapRestore technology, registration of ASM backups with the Oracle® Recovery Manager, shortly known as Oracle® RMAN, and block-level verification of ASM backups using the Oracle DB Verify utility.
Your Excellency, Mr. Complexity ... Are you really sure that your solution will "simplify management of your customer's production environments"?
All the best,
neto
NetApp - I love this company!
