NFSv4.1 specification now in the hands of the Area Advisor

Connectathon 2008 ended with no issues raised since draft-23 was posted. So we have handed the specification to the Area Director for review. At this point, the working group has no more to do on the NFSv4.1 specification.

Connectathon 2008 has Started

Connectathon started a couple days ago.  As I mentioned previously, I am at home recovering from the trauma of a dead T42 but I'm heading there tomorrow.

Several folks from NetApp, including Dave Noveck, Theresa Raj, Dan Muntz, Tom Talpey, and me (Dave, Spencer Shepler of Sun, and me will be giving an update of the NFSv4.1 spec), will be presenting at the Connectathon technical track.

As you might expect, pNFS dominates the agenda.

While the testing floor is closed to all but registered participants, the talks are open to everyone.

Update on NFSv4.1 Specification

I am still at home recovering from a laptop that died while on the road and vowing to that when I get its replacement that I will run a hyper-visor on it so that my desktop environment can be more easily transported. And I am hoping NetApp's IT department looks at something like VMware's VDI really soon. Road warriors need it.

My backup strategy was to insert a  flash card in a PCMCIA Compact Flash Adaptor and then leave it inserted in the laptop. The "My Documents" folder of the hard disk was backed up once a week to the flash card using some freeware called Karen's Replicator. This actually worked pretty well, except that it didn't have the last 24 hours of changes to the NFSv4.1 spec that I'd made. Luckily the laptop booted one last time and those edits were committed last night. So you can check it out at http://www.eisler.com/2008-05-09.

Anyway enough about the backup problems every laptop computer user deals with ...

The NFSv4.1 specification has been in a limbo state between Working Group Last Call ending and the NFSv4 Working Group handing the specification to IETF Transport Area Directorate, which oversee various working groups including NFSv4. That limbo was me reading the spec front to back looking for inconsistencies and word smith defects. I think that period of limbo is nearly over. I will know more after I go to Connectathon next week and hear what NFSv4.1 implementers have to say.
