Weekly "Thank You" to our Partners!!

Posted by Brian Gracely - Sr.Manager, Virtualization Architecture and Marketing

As we've mentioned before, the lines between Computing, Networking and Storage are quickly blurring for both customers and our partners that support them.  Add to this the rapid movement across our industry for partnerships, OEM, cross-licensing, coopetition and reselling and it means that flexibility is at a all-time premium.

The partner that I'd like to highlight and thank this week is Paul Stringfellow at Gardner Systems PLC in the UK. Not only is Paul vocal about the great things they have been able to do with NetApp + VMware solutions, but he's been vocal about the latest successes they have had integrating NetApp + Hyper-V. Having experience with this broad array of vendor technologies allows Gardner Systems to bring flexibility to their customer's business problems, allowing them to best match risk-avoidance, time-to-market, and technology advancement to their business needs.

As we do every Friday, we try and thank the people that allow us to be successful, because they are making their companies more successful. We try and highlight people that are openly talking about solving a unique problem.  We realize that there are 100s of NetApp virtualization partners that are out there doing this every day, and we'd love to hear about them.  Drop us a line and tell us about your unique successes!!

Weekly "Thank You" to our Customers!!

We can't thank them all directly, but here's a nice sampling of customers and partners that are doing incredible things for their business by utilizing NetApp for their virtualized environments. "Thank you!!" to all of them for letting us be a small part of your success!!

Top Five Hyper-V Best Practices

[cross-posted from NetApp Tech OnTap Newsletter, November, 2009]

By Chaffie McKenna, NetApp

Microsoft® Hyper-V™ virtualization technology has been shipping for more than a year. Tech OnTap profiled the use of Hyper-V with NetApp® technology in several past articles, including an overview article and a detailed case study of one customer’s experiences.

NetApp has been involved with hundreds of Hyper-V deployments and has developed a detailed body of best practices for Hyper-V deployments on NetApp. Tech OnTap asked me to highlight the top five best practices for Hyper-V on NetApp, with special attention to the recently released Hyper-V Server 2008 R2.

    * Network configuration

    * Setting the correct iGroup and LUN protocol type

    * Virtual machine disk alignment

    * Using cluster shared volumes (CSVs)

    * Getting the most from NetApp storage software and tools

You can find full details on these items and much more in NetApp Storage Best Practices for Microsoft Virtualization which has been updated to include Hyper-V R2.

Thin Provisioning in Oracle VM 2.2 + NetApp storage = Even more storage efficiency!!

Posted by: Preetom Goswami, Technical Marketing Engineer

[This post builds upon recent Oracle VM + NetApp posts: here, here and here]

During recently held Oracle Open World in San Francisco, Oracle announced the availability of the next version of Oracle VM – 2.2. There are quite a number of enhancements in the new version related to the storage layer – one important new feature is the support for OCFS2 v1.4. The implications of using OCFS2 v1.4 are very interesting – for example its feature for sparse file support is very effective in a virtual environment (i.e. on virtual disks). If you are familiar with VMware vSphere, you can think of it as the thin provisioned virtual disks supported by VMware vSphere.

One area of common confusion related to storage provisioning in a virtual infrastructure is the concept of thin provisioning – especially because it is now supported in both server virtualization (e.g. sparse files in Oracle VM 2.2) and NetApp storage virtualization layers. Are they competing technologies? Which one should I use in my virtual infrastructure? Does the support for thin provisioning in the server virtualization layer in a way dilute the value provided by thin-provisioning in the NetApp storage virtualization layer? You might very well be asking yourself some of these questions. And the answer is – NO – they are actually complementary technologies which leads to more storage savings. To put it simply, now you have the power to do thin provisioning in the ‘storage repository’ level of Oracle VM in addition to thin provisioning the underlying NetApp storage.

If you are using NetApp storage for Oracle VM server’s storage repositories, it’ll be interesting to see how this new feature of sparse files in OVM layer impacts the over-all storage efficiency of the virtual infrastructure. Let’s examine them case by case.

Suppose you are using NFS storage repositories exported from NetApp FAS system for the Oracle VM server pool. Then as you might have guessed, your storage is already thin provisioned for optimal storage efficiency regardless of the version of the Oracle VM server you use. The figures below show the example for two Oracle VM servers – one v2.1.5 and the other v2.2. The NFS storage repository of size 20GB holds an OEL VM template of approximately 6GB, however the storage utilization is just above 2GB because the NFS volume residing in the NetApp storage are thin provisioned by default and consumes only the actual size of the virtual disk.

Effortlessly building Oracle Dev/Test using Oracle VM Templates and NetApp Clones - prequel

Posted by: Preetom Goswami, Technical Marketing Engineer

A few weeks back, I had discussed the process of quickly building dev/test environments using Oracle VM templates and NetApp clones. But before embarking on that road, some questions can arise: where do we get these templates? How closely can these OVM templates really mimic the production database or applications? The answer is simple: the ‘p2v’ utility provided with the Oracle VM server can help us with creating Oracle VM templates that are actually the exact reproduction of your production environment.

Here I have an example Oracle database running on a physical RHEL 5 server and the database is stored on FC LUNs from a NetApp FAS system.

image

image

The process of creating a storage efficient dev/test environment from this system can be something like this:

1. First create an Oracle VM template from the production system using the ‘p2v’ utility that comes with the OVM CD. The template will be directly imported into the Oracle VM manager.

image

2. Now that the physical Oracle database server has been imported as a VM template, you should be able to see the VM image files of OVM template inside the ‘seed_pool’ directory of the storage repository of your Oracle VM server.

image

Note that the OVM storage repository used is an NFS shared storage created from a NetApp FAS system. Also observe the current consumed space of the OVM storage repository holding the template.

V/C/E was an awesome accomplishment, but we still like */*/N

Posted by Brian Gracely - Sr.Manager, Virtualization Architecture and Marketing

A week ago, like many people, I sat in awe throughout the day watching the magnitude of the VCE launch unfold. It was awesome!! I give trememdous kudos to the Marketing, Technical Marketing, PR, Web and Creative departments at Cisco, EMC and VMware. To coordinate that many people to be focused on a single event is an incredible undertaking, and I've been lucky enough to be part of some huge ones in the past.

But over the past week, as the dust settles, we've all had some time to think about what VCE means to customers, our partners and our businesses.

More than ever, I'm excited that NetApp made conscious decisions several years ago to invest in openness for the virtualized Data Center market. I've highlighted that openness and flexibility in the past. While we still have outstanding partnerships and solutions with both VMware and Cisco, including Cisco Validated Designs, we firmly believe that customers deserve choice to best align their business needs with their technology needs. If Cisco/VMware/NetApp are the best choice, we've got great solutions for them today. If one of those components isn't the best fit, we have outstanding (and award winning) partnerships with Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, Citrix and many others. As the only truly Unified Storage vendor that delivers integration and storage efficiency across all virtualization partners, we believe that driving customer value through flexibility is a strategy that will benefit both customers and partners in the long-run.

More than ever, I'm glad that we're been very transparent about our position around go-to-market (Rule #1) and how we plan to engage so that customers ultimately get the best possible solution for their business problems. While technology can do some incredible things, it doesn't do them alone. If the people elements aren't aligned, it's amazing how many great ideas can get bogged down. We believe in letting skilled engineers build great products, in letting skilled operators run networks, and in letting customers focus on running their businesses.  We're not in the business of making proof point sandboxes so that we can learn at customers expense.  We've been able to learn a tremendous amount about operating large-scale Data Centers by working closely with our partners (and building our own Green Data Center).

More than ever, I'm glad that creative Systems Integrators (and NetApp partners) are adding unique value to their Data Center service offerings by leveraging NetApp as part of their solution.  We firmly believe that innovation comes from flexibility, and innovation helps increase productivity and reduce costs.  We're proud of the innovation that our partners deliver today, and we're very excited to see what they come up with in the next couple of years. In today's Web 2.0 world, where good ideas come from everywhere and they are magnified by great collaboration, NetApp will be re-doubling our efforts to engage creativity from our partners to solve the difficult challenges that face the Data Centers in this new decade.

Never before have we seen such a parallel shifting of technology, global economics and business needs. I'd be lying if I said that I know where it will all come out in 3-5 years, but I do know that it won't look like it does today. My advice is to think slowly, make sure your decisions align with the business needs of your company, and to stay focused on flexibility.  The global economy dictates that those with the most flexibility will survive and prosper when the next "100 year flood" comes along.

As the ancient Chinese proverb tells us, "May you live in interesting times...".  With so many industry changing technologies, and so many companies on each other's dance cards, I think it's fair to say that we're living in interesting times.

VMware View 4 and NetApp Deliver Flexible, Cost Effective, Secure Virtual Desktops

Posted by Brian Gracely - Sr.Manager, Virtualization Architecture and Marketing

Today, VMware launched View 4.  The following is from a joint whitepaper being released by VMware and NetApp, focused on business level decision makers looking for best-in-class Virtual Desktop solutions.

===========================

In today’s rapidly changing world, the ability to deliver the right information to the right people at the right time creates the opportunity to close the next deal, bring the next product to market faster, or deliver the information needed to save a life. But with so many different needs, task workers to power users, desktops to mobile devices, today’s CIO is faced with the daunting task of building a strategy that satisfies the diversity of  user needs while at the same time meeting corporate objectives for cost, security, and compliance

In the past, enterprise IT organizations were forced to choose between either the delivery of robust computing services, or the reduction of costs / service levels. With the introduction of hosted virtual desktop solutions, IT organizations are now able to deliver business breakthroughs, improve productivity and reduce operational costs by up to 50% (1).  At the forefront of the virtual desktop revolution is a combination of offerings from VMware and NetApp. By combining industry leading virtualization and storage solutions, customers are able to accelerate the delivery of business critic information to users and customers while reducing operational costs and increasing security.

As much as it gets parodied, the reality is that the lifeblood of Microsoft's extensive reach with customers is the ability to allow developers and parters to extend value to their platform through tight integration. Allowing partner products with unique value to gain access to the massive installed base of Microsoft customers.

Continuing our commitment to open, flexible, value-driven solutions, we are extending our Microsoft management integration for both virtual and non-virtual environments.

  • SnapManager for Hyper-V (SMHV)
  • SnapManager 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server  (SME)
  • Appliance Watch PRO 2.0

Especially in virtualized environments, what we've learned over the past couple of years, is that providing the most efficient storage solutions is only half the requirement.  Providing linkages into the management and operations of both VMs and Applications is key to customers unlocking the cost savings and operational value.

These announcements build on reference architectures, best practices, and unique capabilities that we've shown in the past around Virtualization and Application integration for Microsoft and NetApp environments.

We try and focus this blog on all things virtualization, but if you're looking for more in-depth discussion about all things Microsoft + NetApp, I highly recommend you check out our Microsoft Alliance Engineering blog.  Lee Gates (Sr.Manager - Microsoft Alliance) has more details on these announcements here.

Sometimes saving $$ on Storage can be fun...

Posted by Brian Gracely - Sr.Manager, Virtualization Architecture and Marketing

This past week, I was invited by the nice people from DataLink (NetApp STAR partner) to present at their roadshow here in Raleigh. The focus was on solutions where VMware and NetApp were being utilized to drive greater efficiency in customer's Data Centers.

My favorite part of these roadshow events is that we always invite some local customers to talk about how they are using VMware and NetApp technology to solve a business problem.  The talks are completely informal, very candid (some good things, some bad things) and they usually lead to great Q & A from the audience.  One of the speakers was Ben Gent from Revlon.  Ben talked about the challenges they face running a global operation where parts of it are highly regulated (cosmetics are considered a "drug" by the FDA). And like many VMware / NetApp customers today, he talked about massive cost savings and footprint consolidation they have been able to achieve over the past 12-8 months.

At this point you're probably thinking, "oh great, yet another story where NetApp tells me they saved somebody money using virtualization...".  You're right, that seems to be one of the things we highlight quite a bit these days. But the conclusion to Ben's story had a fun twist.  The last line of his PPT said...

  • We used the money we saved to buy MacBook Pro's for the IT group
At the heart of every techie, we all like new gadgets, and it made me smile that some of the neat things VMware and NetApp do to save companies money could go to make the day-to-day job of hard working IT professionals a little more fun.

Keep up the great work Ben. The products you help ship every day are a favorite at dress up time with my kids, and working time for my wife!!
